Illegitimate son of a goddess of marriage and fidelity

Bert Fenton was born in Hilton Head, South Carolina, to William Fenton, a wealthy hotel owner and Lowcountry land baron, and Juno Karos, a successful international financier. Complications in childbirth took Juno’s life (or so Bert and his father thought). The two had never married, instead meeting in periodic rendezvouses, until Juno informed him she was pregnant. William did his best to raise his son, but his despondence and guilt about Juno’s death left him a doting father at best. Wallace Bertram Fenton’s precociousness was enough for an inexperienced single father to deal with, but that was coupled with the child’s odd resonance with animals and plants…and William Fenton was overwhelmed. Bert thinks now his beleaguered father married his stepmother, Eve Coburn Fenton, just to get some help with him. Eve treated Bert reasonably well, and luckily was a reasonably adept parent. Still, Bert was mostly raised by his family’s nannies, housekeepers, and groundskeepers, especially once William and Eve began having children together. Bert never suffered the much-feared “stepson syndrome” as he had a surrogate family of sorts in the household staff, with whom he forged a lasting bond. When William died in a plane crash during a freak storm (which Bert now views very suspiciously given the revelation of his true parentage), Bert was left the old family home since Eve had since moved the children to Florida to be with her extended family. Bert’s intelligence, perceptiveness, and easily trustworthy demeanor allowed him to excel in his initial efforts at anything, but for some reason he felt drawn to investigations. He spent a couple of years as an police detective before going out on his own, mostly because they saddled him with the more complicated white-collar crimes, which he really hated as he felt it squandered his skills. Now, he finds that his case load is filled with investigations of infidelity, mostly marital, but also some between business partners. He finds this especially ironic now that he knows about his parentage. His family fortune allows him to do whatever he likes most of the time, especially when combined with Fidelitas Investigations, Inc., and its caseload. Most of the wealth is tied up in land investments, so he doesn’t have as much access to liquid assets as one might expect. And he’s loathe to part with the family’s land, given his attachment to the people there that he grew up with. Bert took a summer semester at the American University in Athens during his senior year in college, and of course that was when his mother made contact. Bert was taken aback for the first time in his life, but a little part of him felt elated that he might get the chance to know his mother. Then, of course, he got to know her…who knew Greek myths were so factual? By the time Bert had become acquainted with his divine lineage and had received his artifacts from his mother, he honestly was ready to get the hell out of Greece and back to the mortal world.
